Book Review: I Love You Rituals by Becky A. Bailey PhD

If there is a child in your family who is challenging to manage, this is one book that you must absolutely get hold of this school semester. Children who are challenging to manage include those with:

  • Hyperactivity and attention deficits disorder
  • Sensory integration issues
  • Adoption history
  • Change in family circumstances (e.g. divorce, relocation or new schools)
  • Difficulty in reading social cues

Some children with speech and language disorders demonstrate challenging behaviours, and speech/language intervention often becomes an uphill task. This is where parents or remediation teachers could help set the stage for learning by building these Rituals into the children’s lives. Deceptively simple, the Rituals imbue solid scientific and attachment theories, which Bailey so cleverly explains in approachable terms at the initial chapters of the book.

The Rituals are made up of are positive nursery rhymes, interactive finger games, silly interactions and soothing and relaxing games. The cornerstones of these Rituals include the philosophy of touch as being so essential to foster brain development; and the importance of adults providing high quality feedback, which is essential to help build the child’s sense of self and security. The Rituals will be well loved by children from 2 years to 7 years of age.

Don’t just Read “I love you Rituals”, implement them in your lives if you wish to:

  • Boost your child’s brain potential by priming the brain for learning (through touch)
  • Encourage cooperation and caring
  • Promote learning and literacy
  • Increase attention and decrease power struggles
  • Build bonds of unconditional love
