We’ve all heard that the secret to achieving sustainable weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight is Lifestyle. And what exactly is lifestyle?

Lifestyle is a term used to describe what we do most commonly on a day to day basis. That is, what we eat most regularly and how regularly we are active. In other words, what we eat and do consistently.

Ultimately, no matter what eating plan or exercise regime you choose, maintaining consistency throughout your chosen program will be the deciding factor in your success. Here are some tips on how to stay focused, be consistent and reap the benefits.

Short and Long Term Goals

Motivation is the fuel that keeps you burning and motivation is determined by your goals. Usually, long term goals are more effective than short term goals, ironically, most people concentrate on the latter.

Set your short term goals (fantastic way to increase your motivation levels) but have a long term goal as well, that way when you obtain your short term goal you will not stop but continue to reach your long term goal.

Long term goals become deep-seated. Doing something consistently over a long period of time becomes habit, and once that habit is well established, it becomes constitutional. These types of goals will help you stay focused and develop good habits for the long haul.

Celebrate your small victories while pushing towards your long term goal.

Find an Eating and Exercise Plan That Will Suit Your Needs

Increase your chances of success by consistently following a realistic meal plan and exercise regime. Investigate your past attempts and adjust your new regime accordingly. Follow an eating and exercise plan that you feel good about and can be incorporated into your current lifestyle without compromising your target goals.

Don’t set yourself up to workout 7 days a week doing all kinds of exercises if you are not physically capable of doing so. Choose a routine based on your capabilities and what makes you feel good and do it consistently.

Maintaining a level of consistency does take practice. There may be days when you over eat or miss a walk, however, keep at it and it will become second nature. You cannot, under any circumstances, undermine all your efforts because of a slip here and there. Evaluate why it happened, adjust and move on. This is not a race to the finish line, but rather a way to train your mind and body to a new way of living.

Variety is the Spice of Life and Have Fun!

Have fun while on your way to a healthier you. You could substitute one of your usual daily workouts for a cycle along East Coast Park. Or join a walking club where you get to meet other people. Being fit is about being active. As long as you stay consistent about your activity level, you can change things around to make it fun, fresh and interesting.

Keep It Real and Be Consistent

Rather than bombarding your precious time with the logistics behind every diet or vigorous workout routine such as counting calories or keeping track of reps, make sure that you first understand the importance of consistency. Finding an eating or exercise plan is easy. Following through with discipline is obviously more difficult but will inevitably result in bigger rewards.

Remember, it’s not your choice of program that dictates your end result but rather your commitment in accommodating it on a regular basis. Keep it real and be consistent.
