Birth is an extremely stressful event for a baby and the mother, during which they are subjected to an enormous amount of forces from uterus contractions. These contractions are necessary to push the baby through the birth canal. This is a natural process that can occasionally becomes disturbed and lead to certain conditions arising. Typically, this is seen by compressions in the skull and body of the baby, which may stay after the birth process.

Most babies cope very well with the birth process and recover naturally, however this is not always the case. This is where primary healthcare practitioners may be needed to encourage the natural healing process.

The effect that compressional forces and retained moulding of the skull have on the infant are different for each individual.

Common conditions that can arise in babies.

  • Crying irritable babies – often need to be carried and do not like being left in a crib for sustained periods of time.
  • Feeding difficulties – can arise from the baby not latching onto the breast sufficiently. This can be time consuming and feeds start to merge together.
  • Colic and wind – over regurgitation of milk after or between feeds. Typically, increased bouts of crying often in the evening.
  • Sleep disturbances – the baby sleeps only for short periods in the day or night. Also, wakes extremely easily.

These compressions may also have an effect on a growing child.

  • Recurrent infections – most commonly arising in the ears and throat.
Persistent mouth breathers – this may lead to chronic infections. It may also lead to dental issues with teeth crowding.
  • Behavioural problems – poor concentration levels and constant fidgeting.
  • Exaggerated growing pains – this can lead to difficulties, which can have an effect on sports activities and general performance. If this is not addressed early on it may promote a sedentary lifestyle at an age where children should be active.

Cranial Osteopathy:

Cranial osteopathic treatment can be very useful in addressing the above conditions. Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle treatment approach which focuses on disturbances around the skull and pelvis. This in turn can encourage change in the rest of the body, which reduces stresses being held in the body.

On average 2 to 6 treatments are sufficient due to the babies body being able to respond extremely quickly to these subtle inputs. However, this can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the age of the child. Treatment can be done as soon as the baby is born.
